What to know about norovirus
By Alice Park
Senior Health Correspondent

SARS-CoV-2 has dominated headlines for the past few years, but it's not the only virus we should be worrying about. Norovirus—aka the stomach flu—is now on the rise in the U.S., according to the latest outbreak tallies from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Here's what experts told me about the current norovirus outbreaks.

  • They're roaring back. Now that most COVID-19 infection control measures have disappeared in the U.S., “I do think we getting back to pre-pandemic epidemiology of many these viruses,” says Dr. Camille Sabella, director of the center for pediatric infectious diseases at Cleveland Clinic Children’s. That, unfortunately, includes norovirus.
  • Vaccines are a target. There is no vaccine yet for norovirus, but there should be given the number of outbreaks, says James Samuel, department head of microbial pathogenesis and immunology at Texas A&M School of Medicine. The recent success of using mRNA technology in the COVID-19 vaccines should lead to a push for using the same platform for a norovirus vaccine.
  • You can protect yourself. Start by adding in more regular hand washing and paying closer attention to food-safety practices. Make sure to cook seafood to at least 145°F.

AN EXPERT VOICE

"We need to pay attention to single people in the workplace. They're usually bombarded with tasks because their employers assume they're freer than others. There's a need for a more inclusive workplace culture that recognizes relationship diversity."
