Why you’re seeing a PA or NP—but not a doctor |

"I need a real doctor," a friend said to me recently. We'd both been seeing the same nurse practitioner as our primary care provider for a few years in New York, but some instinct made him worry that he wasn't getting the full spectrum of care from a NP. |
More people are seeing NPs and physician assistants, as opposed to physicians, because they are typically more available, and their numbers are expected to grow in coming years. But my friend's determination to replace our NP with a doctor made me wonder: What's the difference between an MD, NP, and PA, and do they all provide the same level of care? |
