BIG NUMBER |
5 million |
The number of people who lost Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace coverage in 2026, according to a new report from the advocacy group FamiliesUSA. |
In 2025, Congress decided not to renew some premium subsidies that made ACA plans less expensive, leaving millions unable to afford the plans this year. Many of these people have incomes far below the federal poverty level and live in rural communities, the report found. —Alana Semuels |

THE QUOTE THAT STUCK |
| ❝ |
| |
I'm concerned that we're responding to a market-induced demand rather than a decision based on solid science. |
| |
| Dr. Elizabeth Rebello |
|
|
Yesterday, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that the government will not take action against pharmacies that dispense certain unapproved peptides to consumers. |
The six peptides, which are short chains of amino acids that people inject into their bodies, have not been FDA-approved and are largely scientifically unproven. |
Dr. Elizabeth Rebello, an anesthesiologist at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, was one of the few doctors on an FDA advisory committee who repeatedly voted against allowing a move like this to happen in July. Her quote hints at the peptide rush we could be about to experience in the U.S. —A.S. |

A dietitian’s just-add-water dinner stash |
 |
Avery Zenker |
|
Avery Zenker’s dinner stash is ready for a backpacking trip. It’s also ready for a random Thursday. The registered dietitian keeps homemade “just add water” meals in her cupboard, including peanut noodles, burrito bowls, and chocolate oatmeal. She portions dry ingredients like rice noodles, powdered peanut butter, and dried vegetables into single servings, mixing in seasonings to keep things interesting. When she gets hungry, a hot-water soak gets a meal on the table in five to 10 minutes. “I love cooking, but I don’t always have time,” she says. |
Some ingredients come from Zenker’s dehydrator, which she runs several times a week. Her shelves hold a colorful collection of labeled jars, from deep-pink beet powder to garden-grown green onions, ready to stir into meals. Drying produce also helps her rescue food she might otherwise toss. “I now have local summer produce I can use all winter, like peaches, blueberries, zucchini, and bell peppers.” —A.H. |

ONE SMALL CHANGE |
This 30-second habit can improve your balance |
Balance isn’t a trait—it’s a skill you can practice. Stand beside a sturdy counter, lift one foot, and work toward holding the position for 30 seconds before switching sides. A little wobbling is normal. To make the habit stick, try it while your coffee brews or when you brush your teeth. —A.H. |
